How it's classified

Drugs are listed alphabetically and grouped by therapeutic category using the WHO's Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical (ATC) Classification System — the international standard for drug utilization research, also used by EphMRA. Each entry also references the WHO's Defined Daily Dose (DDD) system, established in 1976 and maintained by the WHO Collaborating Centre for Drug Statistics Methodology, as a consistent unit for comparing drug usage.

Why the format matters

A generic name appears under each brand name wherever a single active ingredient makes that possible. For more complex preparations — multivitamins and haematinics, for instance — the entry lists drug contents directly instead, since there is no single generic name to give. The goal throughout is preventing prescribing errors: wrong dosage, wrong duration of treatment, or a poor combination of drugs.

Reading an ATC code

Every code, broken into five levels

Paracetamol's code — N02BE01 — is built from five levels defined by the WHO. Pharma+Plus lists the full code against every generic name, so the same drug can be cross-referenced internationally.
